Press & brand

Brand kit

Everything you need to refer to Marrowtype in writing or in design. The logo, the name story, the palette, the rules. Use it however helps you, within the limits below.

The name

Written Marrowtype, one word, capital M, no space. In running prose use it as a proper noun: "an article on Marrowtype," not "an article on marrowtype" and not "an article on the Marrowtype." The wordmark renders in lowercase (marrowtype) for visual reasons; the spelled-out brand is still capital-M.

The name is a compound. Marrow is the essence inside the bone, the substance at the centre. Type is the unit of print. Together, the name means roughly: the substance, set in type. The connotation is editorial — we are after the marrow of an argument, not its surface. The name is also very short, easy to spell after hearing, and hadn't been used by any other publication when we registered it.

How to pronounce it: mair-oh-type. Stress on the first syllable.

Logo

Two pieces. A square mark (the lowercase "m" with an accent dot) and a horizontal wordmark (the name set in bold sans-serif). They can be used together or separately.

Colours

Eight colours. The light theme uses Paper + Ink + Moss; the dark theme uses Coal + Bone + Lichen. The rest are line, muted text, and accent surfaces. Hex values are canonical; converting to other formats is fine.

Using the logo

Do

  • Use the default mark on light surfaces, the inverted mark on dark surfaces.
  • Leave clear space around the mark equal to at least half its width.
  • Keep the mark at a minimum size of 24px so the letterform stays legible.
  • If reproducing in a single colour, use Ink or Bone — whichever has contrast with the background.
  • Use the SVG when scale matters and the PNG when filesize matters.

Don't

  • Don't recolour the mark to another accent. Moss or Lichen are the only accents.
  • Don't outline, drop-shadow, or emboss the mark.
  • Don't stretch the mark or the wordmark on either axis.
  • Don't place the mark on busy photography. Use the inverted mark or add a contrast plate.
  • Don't crop or partially obscure the mark.
  • Don't recreate the wordmark in another typeface.

Voice

How we sound is documented in detail at our house style page. For a one-line summary: editorial register, "we" not "I", short sentences, no marketing language, no em-dashes, sources at the bottom of every factual claim.

If you are quoting us in your own writing, attribute the piece to Marrowtype and link to the article. Author bylines are deliberately collective.
